Case Study: Varuna River Survey in Varanasi

Background:

The Varuna River, historically significant in Varanasi, has faced severe degradation, turning from a flowing river into more of a stagnant drain over time. Recognizing the urgent need to address the root causes, the Varanasi Development Authority (VDA) initiated a comprehensive survey across the river’s 40 km stretch through the city. This survey aimed to analyze the environmental and infrastructural factors contributing to the river’s current state, enabling authorities to implement targeted restoration measures.

Objectives:
  • Identify Contamination Sources : Locate industrial and residential discharge points and evaluate their impact on river health.
  • Analyze River Flow and Sedimentation : Map river flow patterns and sediment deposits to understand obstructions and stagnant areas.
  • Enable Efficient Restoration Efforts : Provide data for actionable insights to guide VDA's restoration and conservation initiatives.
Our Approach:

Flightwing utilized high-resolution drone-based imaging and LiDAR technology for a complete aerial survey of the river, combined with geospatial analysis for pinpointing areas of concern. Data collected was used to generate a detailed, 3D model of the river stretch, highlighting pollution points, structural encroachments, and sediment levels.

Technology Used:
  • Drones equipped with LiDAR sensors for accurate 3D mapping.
  • GIS (Geographic Information System) tools for spatial analysis.
  • Imaging technology for pollution and contamination mapping.
Project Phases:
  • Initial Mapping and Data Collection :Complete aerial imagery and LiDAR scans of the 40 km river stretch to identify problem areas.
  • Data Analysis and Reporting : Geospatial data analysis and report generation, including 3D models and contamination source mapping.
  • Presentation to Authorities : Comprehensive findings were presented to the VDA to support their decision-making.
Results & Impact:
  • Clear Identification of Pollution Sources :The survey identified multiple discharge points from nearby residential and industrial zones contributing to water quality degradation.
  • Data-Driven Restoration Plan : The survey results enabled VDA to design a focused, efficient restoration strategy, prioritizing high-impact zones for cleanup and structural changes.
  • Community Impact : The initiative laid the groundwork for long-term restoration of the Varuna River, with significant awareness raised regarding its environmental importance.
Client Feedback:
"Flightwing’s survey provided the insights we needed to see the full scope of issues affecting the Varuna River. Their high-precision technology has equipped us with data that will be invaluable in our efforts to revive and restore the river."
